If you’re a beginner disc golfer this post aims to give you the best advice on what discs to buy. You can always reach out to us at Rare Discs for more advice if you need help deciding.
True Beginner with No Disc Experience
If you’re a true beginner who has never thrown a disc before and just want to try it out at the lowest cost, we recommend the Discmania Active Line Soft or the Discmania Active Geo starter sets. These are super affordable and a great way to discover the sport.
- Active Line Soft Starter Set: best for players who have not experienced throwing discs. These have a softer grip and are super easy to throw.
- Active Line Geo Starter Set: a more firm grip for players who have some throwing experience and expect to play more.
The main downside to these starter sets is that players with athletic experience may outgrow them quickly. These starter sets are made out of base plastic, which offers better grip but is more prone to dents, dings and knicks from impacting hard ground, rocks and the chains. If you expect to play casually a couple times a month, these discs will last a long time. However players with more athletic experience or those who expect to play frequently should look at our next section instead.
Beginners Who Expect to Play Often or Have Throwing Experience
The best starter set in the game is the Axiom Premium Starter set. This starter set has bright colours and more durable plastics which means these discs will last substantially longer if you plan to play regularly. The discs included are thrown by more advanced and professional players.
The main downside is that these discs are a bit more challenging to throw up front, but players with more athletic experience or those who have tried the game and plan to play often will be able to grow into these discs. The premium plastics means that they will last long term.
I Want to Do It Myself!
Are you feeling ambitious? Want some unique stamps or to choose your own colours? Why not build your own starter set! At minimum, start with:
- One Fairway Driver (Speed between 6 and 9)
- One Base Plastic Putter (Speed between 2 and 4)
- One Fun Disc (Something that looks cool you want to try out!)
We have an entire section devoted to easy to throw discs that are more suitable for beginners. Typically the best discs for new players will have a speed below 10 and a negative turn number. We recommend choosing one from each section:
- Putter: Latitude 64 Pure, Axiom Proxy or Prodigy PA-3 300
- Mid-Range: Thought Space Mana or Westside Tursas
- Fairway Driver: Latitude 64 Diamond, Axiom Rhythm or Discraft Heat
For putters, we usually recommend 165g or higher weight. For fairway drivers, choose a lighter weight (155-165g) for ease of throwing. Choose a heavier weight (165-170g+) to grow into.
But What Bag Should I Buy?
Honestly, this one is a mixed bag on recommendation. The basic shoulder bags are a nice item as they hold water and keys, but players tend to outgrow them when they become more serious as they only carry a handful of discs. When we first started playing we just used a fabric shopping bag. If you’re on a budget there’s no harm using what you have at home to carry your discs and upgrading to something more advanced when you start playing more frequently. For players who want a larger bag to grow into, but not something unreasonable big or expensive, the Infinite Discs Slinger Tournament Bags are an excellent middle ground for price, available space and longevity.
