Tariffs and Rare Discs – How Import Tariffs Will Affect Orders Sent to the USA

Tariffs and Rare Discs – How Import Tariffs Will Affect Orders Sent to the USA

Updated February 5rd, 2025; 9:00 AM PST

AS OF FEBRUARY 4TH – CHINA TARIFFS

The United States has decided to remove the De Minimis for shipments containing items that were Made in China. This includes items that were manufactured in China but ship from our store in Canada.

We are unsure what the additional fees will look like for end customers, however they could range from $2.50 up to $30+ USD. We are working with our customs broker to provide more information as at the moment nobody knows for sure what this will entail and everything is up to speculation. For the moment we would advise US customers against buying the following brands:

  • All bags and backpacks
  • All baskets
  • Yikun
  • Discmania Active Line

If a US-bound order contains these products, we will reach out to discuss options.

This new order has resulted in delays with cross border shipping, as orders are subject to further scrutiny to determine if they contain items made in China. Any orders to the USA may see a 1 – 3 business day delay.

AS OF FEBRUARY 3RD – CANADIAN TARIFFS PAUSED

As of February 3rd the threatened tariffs have been paused for at least one month. We hope that this pause lasts forever. However, if they are re-implemented, we will have more time to prepare and a more clear vision of what this means.

We will do our best to keep you up to date on any developments as we learn them.

Previous document left for informational purposes.

Key Takeaways:

  • All international orders shipped by Rare Discs are sent Deliver Duties Unpaid – that means the buyer is responsible for paying any tariffs, taxes, brokerage and fees that their country applies on import
  • In the short term, we do not expect US-bound orders to have import fees applied, as most of our products are Made in the USA and there is a tariff free channel for US Goods Returned
  • This is a rapidly evolving situation and we’ll do our best to keep customers informed as the situation changes

TARIFFS AND USA CUSTOMERS

As we are based in Canada, this is a topic that we unfortunately have to address for our American customers. Previously, all orders under USD $800 would ship to the USA without any tariffs. It is unclear if this will continue.

Since the vast majority of products we source are from the United States, there is a high likelihood they can be shipped back to the USA without any import tariffs due on delivery. However, this is a rapidly changing situation and at the moment there is no information available as to what these ‘blanket tariffs’ will entail. The current de minimis may continue, or we may be able to use the US Goods Returned channels. Shipping options to US customers may change as well.

All orders sent by Rare Discs are shipped DDU – Deliver Duties Unpaid. That means the buyer is responsible for paying any import fees that their country may apply upon order delivery. If the buyer chooses to not pay import fees and rejects the order, the orders are generally not returned to us and are destroyed by the shipping carrier. We do not offer refunds if orders with unpaid customs duties are rejected and we do not receive the product back.

See our shipping policy here (will be updated with further clarifications if the situation changes again).

Again, we want to make it clear that we do not expect US-bound orders to be tariffed at this time, but if that situation changes we will let you know.

HOW WILL THIS AFFECT CANADIAN CUSTOMERS?

Update: The Canadian government has officially announced that the tariffs will include Sports Equipment produced in the USA. That covers brands like Innova, Discraft and MVP/Axiom/Streamline.

Since many of our brands manufacture their discs out of the United States, if duties and tariffs increase the cost of raw plastics and materials, the suppliers will increase the cost to us. As well, any counter tariffs will increase the landed cost.

We expect to see the highest cost increases on bags/backpacks, baskets and other goods sourced from China but distributed out of the USA. Many suppliers have stocked up on inventory anticipating these tariffs. There is a chance prices will not increase for several months. This will give us some time to seek alternative sources for these items and hopefully find lower prices.

We will do our best to resist price increases when we can. Sorry everyone.

I AM A US CUSTOMER WITH AN OPEN PRE-ORDER – HELP!

Please do not panic. We do not expect there to be any additional customs fees due on delivery at least in the short term.

If this changes and our orders will see additional fees, all US-based buyers will be offered the option of a no questions asked refund on their pre-order products.
